Mythological Story And Spiritual Significance
Mythological Legend
According to the Shiva Purana, a demon named Daruka harassed innocent devotees. A great devotee named Supriya was imprisoned by Daruka and continued to worship Lord Shiva. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a Jyotirlinga, vanquished the demon, and blessed the land. Hence, the place became known as ‘Darukavana’, a divine forest blessed by Shiva, and the linga was established as Nageshwar, the “Lord of the Nagas (serpents).” The temple is believed to protect devotees from poison, evil energies, and fear.
