MALLIKARJUNA TEMPLE
The Mallikarjuna Temple, located in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh, is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and one of the 18 Shakti Peethas, making it uniquely revered in both Shaivism and Shaktism. Nestled amidst the scenic Nallamala Hills on the banks of River Krishna, this ancient temple is an extraordinary blend of myth, spirituality, architecture, and nature.
Mythological Story & Spiritual Significance
Mythological Origin:
- According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati chose to reside in Srisailam after being pleased by their son Kartikeya’s penance. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Mallikarjuna (Mallika = Parvati, Arjuna = Shiva).
- The temple is also associated with Adi Shankara, who composed the Sivananda Lahari here.
- It is one of the few temples where both Shiva (as a Jyotirlinga) and Parvati (as Bhramaramba, one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas) are worshipped together.
Spiritual Importance:
- Believed to grant moksha (liberation) to devotees who visit with faith.
- Devotees believe darshan here destroys past sins and blesses them with spiritual growth and peace.
- It is one of the Pancharama Kshetras and a part of the Astadasa Shakti Peethas.
Temple Architecture & Historical Legacy
Dravidian Architectural Splendor:
- The temple is built in Dravidian style, with tall gopurams, intricately carved mandapams, and large courtyards.
- The Linga in the sanctum is self-manifested (Swayambhu) and often adorned with jasmine flowers (Mallika).
- The Bhramaramba Devi shrine, situated in the same complex, features elaborate carvings and murals.
Temple Development History:
- Originates from ancient times, with references in Skanda Purana.
- Enhanced by Vijayanagara rulers, Reddy Kings, and Chalukyas who contributed to the temple’s development.
- Modern-day conservation and expansion handled by the Srisailam Devasthanam Board.
